MID-MONTH INVESTMENT UPDATE
NEW LOOK ON CONTANGO IMAGERY
As CTN enters its second decade, we’re looking to the future with a broader vision, and that means
aligning ourselves more closely with other capabilities of the group, including our Funds Management
business, Contango Asset Management Limited.
Part of this process is a refreshing of the group’s various brands and corporate identity, with the aim of
a consistent look and feel across the group. Each refreshed brand carries the familiar Contango style
and colours, yet they remain distinct from each other. This approach will look to deliver a strong and
recognisable Contango presence, across the group, as we move into the future.
Shareholders will note the refreshed CTN brand here, and in ongoing communications.
PORTFOLIO COMMENT FROM INVESTMENT MANAGER
In May the investment portfolio returned 0.6% bringing the total 12 month portfolio return to 10.8%.
The best performing stocks over the month were Mobile Embrace (+28.6%), Catapult (+18.2%)
Mineral Deposits (+16.7%) and Corporate Travel (+14.4%)
During the month, we saw approximately 20-25 potential IPO’s all looking to list in the new financial
year. Despite these numbers, we remain very selective in regards to what we are investing in.
Our recent activity includes participation in QMS Media, an outdoor media company listing on a very
attractive 10x PE, and Shirriro, a kitchen appliance and consumer products marketing company on an
attractive P/E of just under10x. Garda Property Trust, which focuses on suburban office buildings in
major capital cities, also offers a strong dividend yield of 9.0%.
We have also increased the cash position to around 5-6% during the month, providing the fund with
flexibility to participate in new raisings as well as looking for new opportunities within the existing
portfolio.
The outlook for the microcap space remains exciting. The following portfolio metrics table
demonstrates opportunities to buy Industrial names trading at a substantial P/E discount to the large
cap industrials, which also offer strong earnings growth and dividend yields. We are forecasting global
growth to remain below trend and with commodity prices remaining under pressure, we remain
underweight the Resources sector, and wait for inevitable supply cuts.
The following table identifies the performance of the underlying investment portfolio.
